The Clinical Application of Prostaglandin E1 on Orthodontic Tooth Movement - A Clinical Trial

The purpose of the present study was to verify the effect of exogenous app li cation of Prostaglandi n E, (PGE I) in small dosage on Orthodontic tooth movement in routine orthodontic patients. Fifteen patients were se lected after explaining the experimenta l procedure and obtai ning the wr itten consent. All these patients requi red extract ion of first premolars for the correction of malocclusion. All the patients were banded and bonded w ith .018" Roth prescription . After the initial alignment of upper and lower arches, separate canine retraction was cons idered on .016" S.S rou nd arch wire with light continuous force using Niti canine retraction coi l springs. In all cases 1 microgram ( gm) of PG-E 1 along w ith lignocaine as a vehicle was injected on three different days in the vestibular region distal to the right upper cani ne. The left side was the control side w ith injection of vehicle alone. Occlusograms of pre and 60 days post canine retraction was obta ined and distal canine movement was calculated by using palatal rugae areas as stable land marks. The results obtained showed significa nt increase in orthodontic distal can ine tooth movement on Prostaglandin injected side as compared with matched contro l left side. Rad iographica lly and cl inica ll y, no visib le changes or any indications of root resorption was noted on the experimental side as compared to control side.
